How’d it get to be the end of the year already? Normally, we travel to at least a half dozen art shows a year, making it pretty easy to mark how quickly the year passes. This year, we decided not to do shows, and now I’m not sure how we arrived here at the end of the year. In any case, I’ve been having a lot more fun in my studio than I have in awhile. Without having to produce a ton of inventory to bring on the road with me, I’ve had more time to spend on meaningful custom work and other small batch projects. Three examples are below. If you have a project of your own in mind, let me know!
Also, not being on the road has given me a chance to do other things, like pick up the flute again after decades (so satisfying!), and start taking saxophone lessons, which has been hilarious if nothing else. 🎷😆
Anyway, stay tuned...it seems like we've finally settled into a new normal around here. I have a new laptop and new photo editing software that I've figured out how to use, so I'm posting new stuff to my store regularly! Meanwhile, enjoy the rest of your year and happy holidays!
Normally this time of year, if I’m not on the road headed to one art show or another, I’m locked in my studio making inventory for summer shows. When I’m making jewelry to bring with me to shows, my focus is less on creating and more on producing. While production can be tedious, one perk is that it’s a great time to refine skills. Nothing like making 3 or 4 or 5 of the same design to get really good at the techniques involved. It doesn't however, leave much time for designing new pieces.
And these earrings are what I made with those triangle pieces. Which is your favorite?
Stay tuned for more projects like this. And thanks very much for reading! My two favorite design elements are texture and oxidation. More on oxidation in a future blog post, but for now I’ll just say that the combination of texture and oxidation can completely transform the look of metal. It can even let texture become the focal point in a simple piece of jewelry, as with the earrings and necklace below.
These earrings and necklace all use that texture. I'll look forward to sharing more about my favorite tools in a future post. Thank you for your interest in my work!
